C-Mine (BE)
C-Mine in Genk is the name of a multifunctional complex housed in the renovated power generator buildings of a former coal mine in Winterslag, Belgium. The name was chosen during a contest, with the letter C denoting creativity. C-Mine is home to a number of organisations focusing on entertainment and creativity, including a cinema, health club, cultural centre, workshops, catering facilities and a Media & Design Academy in the old mine building. The generator buildings were renovated beautifully and expanded to include two new theatre halls and an exhibition hall. Merford supplied about forty acoustic interior and front and back doors of the cultural centre, which was opened in September 2010. A number of these doors have fire-resistant and/or emergency escape properties. In addition to the doors, Merford also supplied top panels for the exterior façade. The difficulty in this project lay in aligning the door lines to the top panels.
